Cult product inspiration: Carrot Butter Cleanser

When you invent something that leaps into cult reputation you must be prepared for the copy cats to follow. This can be constantly seen in both fashion and the cosmetics worlds. The environment and people around you are great sources of inspiration and being influenced by them doesn´t necessarily mean that you´re directly copying others actions. All the great musicians and artists have explored and practiced the works of masters on their way to finding their own “voice”.

I was planning new concepts for articles for my blog when a friend of mine had a brilliant idea: DIY cosmetics inspired by cult products. The thought is to introduce inspiring cult products and create my own DIY recipe for them. The purpose is not to copy the product and to try and replicate it, but to pick a couple of inspiring ingredients from it and make a whole new product. For instance a moisturiser may be the inspiration for an oil serum or a body moisturiser can be transformed into a body scrub. Surely there may be a couple of more straight forward copies like for instance this carrot-lavender-rosemary cleansing balm. You can find this  recipe in my book Genuine Beauty (the book has been published in Finnish, but we’re trying to find an international publisher for it), the inspiration for this product stems from The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser.

Carrot Butter is unfortunately unavailable in Finland at the moment because there is no one importing the line currently. It´s a shame because all the products from this line that I have tested are high-quality and effective and the carrot butter was one of my favorites. But fret not, this invigorating and effective cleanser that brightens, cleanses and gently cares for your skin is super easy to prepare with this simplified recipe.

Carrot-lavender-rosemary cleansing balm

15 ml melted shea butter

10 ml melted cacao butter

15 ml melted coconut oil

15 ml avocado oil

15 ml almond oiljojoba oil is a great option as well)

Essential oils

3 drops of carrot seed oil

5 drops of lavender oli

3 drops of frankincense oli (you can replace the frankincense with chamomile oil)

3 drops of rosemary oil

Melt the shea butter, cacao butter and coconut oil in a hot water bath without letting the butters and oil heat over 42 degrees. Easy does it while melting. Combine the butters, oil and cold pressed oils together and mix thoroughly. Lastly add in the essential oils and once again mix well. Pour the mixture in a sanitised 50ml glass jar and tightly close the lid. Let it cool in room temperature. You can store the cleanser in room temperature protected form direct sunlight for up to six months. Be sure to check the best before dates on your oils though.

To use the cleansing balm massage a small amount on dry skin for a couple of minutes and wipe it off with a warm wet muslin cloth. Rinse the cloth and repeat if necessary. Wash the cloth with soap and water after every use.

Now it´s your turn to make a wish: what cult product inspired  DIY recipes would you like for me to create? Have you had a chance to try out recipes from my book?
